oil viscocity
So, tedious subject I know.
Just wandering what oil people run in their 400s? My 460 turbo, on 80k miles, runs silky smooth from cold with excellent oil pressure. But when it's hot it goes quite tappety with absolutely bobbins oil pressure, dropping into the red when at low idle like when in gear (auto) and stationary. I realise that the built in guage is a cr@p piece of kit, much like the boost guage it's not calibrated, but it is showing an indication. Can't remember for sure, but I think I'm currently running 10w 40 synthetic, but it is possibly 5w 30 if that's what I had on the shelf at the time. I'm slightly dubious of running a thicker oil to keep the pressure when hot because of possible starvation to the turbo, but what do you guys think? Cheers, Steve

In the b18u 460 im using 5w30, seems ok, its thinner so it tappets when cold for 5 mins then seems to be ok after that. Iv done about 3k miles since tue new set of rings and hg and before that 40k before the ring gave out, saw no signs of scraping metal or shavings in the sump.
On the b230fttt lol im using 10w30, not sure if ots the correct oil for the engine, but its pretty standard everyday covers all bases oil. Like 30psi in tyres when they come hack from beimg fitted quickly.

Similar question: 1995 440 1.8i B18U, just 74K kms. Car seems to have sat around for a couple of years prior to me putting about 200 miles on it for the past 6 months, so it worked thru some petrol that seems to have gone bad, but is out of its system now.
What would be a good oil viscosity and brand to use? I plan to do about 500 miles a year. |

Using the Castrol oil finder suggests a 5W-30 A3/B4 or C3 oil. When I had a 440 with the B18U engine I'm pretty sure that's what the Volvo dealer used and I think it may have been the A3/B4 stuff.
I'd have thought an oil to that specification from any reputable manufacturer would be fine. Martin |
