Default VOlvo s60 2011 D3 MPG problems

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 2011 S60 SE LUX with the D3 engine and I'm pretty dissapointed with the MPG. I know the 5 pot isnt going to be as efficient as the newer 4 pot engines but looking at other peoples results mine still seems low.

I have a daily commute of 65 miles which is a combination of A road driving and dual carriageways with occasional slow moving queues. I use regular diesel, no passengers and no other loads in car. Regularly use radar guided cruise and drive like miss daisy.

I'm now 3 tanks in and only getting 38 MPG. Car has had a full service 3 months ago, 4 matching good tread tyres pumped up to 36PSI.

Any other obvious things I should check / replace? Or is this an acceptable economy?

Two things I have found impact fuel consumption more than you would probably expect:
  1. Air filter
  2. Battery SoH

My S60 D3 was averaging around 37-39mpg, I swapped the air filter, the one I took out looked like it had never been changed since it left the factory. Gained 10mpg around the houses and nudging 60mpg on a long journey.

My car is a manual, if you have an automatic I'd expect that to be a little heavier on fuel.

If the battery is not holding charge the alternator will be working hard all the time to put charge back in. I had this issue with my Focus and it was adding ~10% to my fuel consumption.

Edit: You might want to add a couple of psi to the tyres - 38 is the ECO setting, I use 37 front, 35 rear.

I am getting 6.2 l/100 km which is identical to your result if I am not mistaken, perfectly acceptable IMHO

Has it been serviced recently (fuel and air filter in particular)?

My S80 D3 auto has just returned from a weeks holiday which involved alot of country road driving and some longer motorway runs. According to the cars computer it averaged 54mpg. I got 750 mile from the tank before refilling. If it was only motorway running I reckon it could get over 800 easy. Your D3 should be good on fuel. I run mine on premium diesel.
