Reading/Removing codes on 1995 850
Hi all, new to the forum and new to Volvos too!
Bought myself an 850 wagon for 2 reasons: 1 - I've always wanted one 2 - I needed something that can fit sheets of ply/plasterboard in and big objects to help with a home renovation and gradual moving. So I now own a 1995 (N plate) 850 2.5 10v which has an OBD2 port. I recently ran out of fuel (annoyingly 500m from the filling station) which resulted in the lambda/CEL light coming on. I tried plugging my OBD2 reader in (Ancel AD410) but that could read the car, i believe it is for post 2001 cars upon some quick research. So I wondered what device people use to read the OBD2 port on this car and what functions it allows? My odometer is also broken so it would be good to know if the device can also provide the true mileage from the ECU? Going off old MOTs it should be around 106k, but I would like to confirm as I have the cogs to repair the odometer. Many thanks. |

Run this question through Google or even search the forum. This is an incredibly common question that is covered in depth by multiple people on multiple forums.
Here are two comprehensive examples to get you started: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/read-codes-volvo-850 https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=83897 Actually mileage can sometimes be read using an ELM327 bluetooth obd reader and the "850 OBDII" app.

Thanks for this. I had Googled and found results on the DIY code reader. However, this does not provide me with any options to remove what's stored, only read what is stored.
I bought the Ancel code reader as it too was recommended for 850 Volvos following another Google search, but turns out it's no good for 1995 850s. Google does offer a number of solutions but unfortunately I was hoping to save time in trying them all and see if someone on this forum who has had similar experience may be able to recommend a tried, tested and successful solution/product. I will look into the bluetooth reader, but the 'sometimes' does not fill me with much confidence, unfortunately. Having a car that sits perfectly in the switch from OBD1 to OBD2 is proving to be a burden. From another Google search (see, I have done it, honest!) a Draper 69007 came up as a recommended tool for old Volvo's, however I cannot find any available to purchase and try. |

VOL-FCR is the best for diagnostics on the 850 (apparently... but I've not used so couldn't say)
The Draper 69007 only resets the service light, nothing else If you have an android phone then download the 850 OBD app from Google play and buy this dongle CLICK

Thanks for that.
I looked into the 850-OBD app and it quotes it's for 96 cars and onwards. I've dropped the developer a message to find out if they have tried it on 95 850s with OBD2 so will see what they say. |

There was a switch from OBDI to OBDII just from 1995 to 1996.
Some 1995 cars may have got OBDII, most didn't. Just having the connector doesn't mean the car supports full OBDII. Even the ones that did have OBDII may be limited functionality. That's why most readers only claim to read 1996 and on, when the 850 officially got OBDII. So for the 1995 car the only answer seems to be "try and see". The link above seems to be the option most likely to work, if it does work. It looks cheap enough for a punt. Last edited by svensktoppen; Aug 17th, 2020 at 15:11. |
