Thin (ish) end of the wedge though, it's like the eco fine manufacturers will need to pay if sales of ice cars exceed a set ratio of total cars sold. People will simply start to say it's not worth even trying to sell into Europe when it's so much easier and cheaper to sell elsewhere.
Why bother to keep factories in Europe when you can make all the cars you want in Asia.

If you make it difficult for industry to compete then industry simply moves out.

I'm gonna buy half dozen cars and stick them in a barn. Wait for prices to go through the roof. This time next year Rodders.

Yep would agree with all of that.

About 4 years ago when the 2030 ICE ban was announced I jested with a friend about what 6 cars we could buy and store to sell later at a profit. Never knew it would have been about +40% in 2 years thanks to Covid.

And if I'm not much mistaked, used car prices are on the climb again, which was inevitable. Have you seen how much low-average miles late model XC60 Mk1 (2016/2017) and P3 XC70 (2015/2016) are making?

Oh that's not so dangerous ... in fact our 1995 car had that.
Sounds like something Volvos probably would've had in that era too?

I think every V40 (Mk2 post 2012) I've driven has had one....

Slow change over time to full authoritarianism. Continually test the great unwashed to gauge their reaction to further change/compliance, and to note their current tolerance levels. If they mass protest against X, rebrand X and implement it anyway.

Once one manufacturer offers derestriction as an option, everyone else will too. Who wants to be a manufacturer known for selling restricted cars? Losers!

I do see some of the sense behind it. As cars have become more refined and comfortable, it's become more and more difficult to "sense" the speed you are travelling at as your senses are insulated from the world outside. Especially with electric cars that have less of the vibration and noise we associate with speed.

I've been driving for nearly 40 years, covering weekly 300+ mile motorway journeys for 30+ years and the standards of driving on our roads is lower than it's ever been and getting worse. So an annoying beep in the cabin is the school mum goes to fast up the high street in her X5 isn't such a bad thing.

I get there will be a significant number who just turn it off, but there will be some who accept it.

My experience so far with smart speed limiters are they’re now that smart. The V60 and XC40 I had as courtesy cars both had them and they were a touch flakey. I was in the A406 and there were two signs side by side in a slipway, one said 40 and one said fifty miles per hour.i was on the 50mph already and the car decided to read the 40mph sign instead. The sudden out of the blue deceleration on a duel carriageway comes as a shock. The other is when you get the speed limit count down signs and the car suddenly decelerates when you’re still a good couple hundred yards away from the real speed limit signs.
My Subaru suffers this, it’ll suddenly read an imaginary sign and try to drop from 60 to 40mph which has me stabbing the limiter off button frantically. I know some of it is GPS aided but the system still needs to be better before they roll it out as a permanent thing.

I hope it's not linked to the intelligent cruise control system.

Misreads speed signs on the autoroute in France e.g. a speed sign applicable for HGVs the car only sees the speed limit and ignores the truck tacked on the bottom. Also, the sudden acceleration in temporary roadworks is a concern.
