Your experience with this is a bit different to mine seen as though it sounds like you weren't driving at the time. Just for info then, when I had this message the abs light came on as well (has yours?). Turned out to be an abs ring - sometimes called the reluctor ring. It's a casselated ring on the end of the half shaft that the abs sensor monitors to detect a locked up wheel. They rust over time and end up cracking which throws the sensor. If your warning message resets itself after driving for a bit then comes back on after a day or two you might want to investigate in this direction. You can actually inspect them with the wheel on - they're almost flush with the inside of the hub carrier. Have a look on Google for some images. If it is a ring get in touch - I can provide full instructions for changing them. My car was the same age as yours when they went.
