D24 cylinder head
 

My mate has pulled the head off his 740 diesel and found a big crack between a valve seat and a pre chamber, he took it to his local engineering shop and they've told him the head is scrap.

So he is after a D24 head with mechanical lifters not the later hydraulic ones.

If anyone has one or knows of one which is serviceable (ie the cracks aren't too bad) then please let me know.

The crack should be repairable, not much taht can not be fixed

That's what I thought but apparently it's scrap, I personally would take it somewhere else as I've seen cylinder heads with complete ports missing fixed by building up many layers of weld and then grinding it in to shape.

Trouble is the cost of doing it he could just buy a new AMC head with far superior casting, typical VAG junk, they even released specifications on how big cracks in the head can be because it was such a common problem, Volkswagens are a quality product my backside!

Perhaps try contact BrickWerks to see if they have the facility or know of a machine shop willing and able to carry out the repair?

No longer needed, he has plumbed for a new AMC head.

Where are the AMC heads available from? Not uncommon for heads to get destroyed with cam belt failure
